A Word from A Friend

Reflections — @ 11:02 am

This message of support was sent by Dr. Ray Tallman, Professor of Global Missiology and Intercultural Studies at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.

I am a friend and colleague of Bill Wagner and I want to tell you why I think he is worthy of your consideration for President of the SBC. I was not asked for this but somehow I think it deserves to be said … by a friend, for your consideration in June. As Bill’s friend I have asked him (more than once) why he would want this assignment. I always knew the answer before the question was asked, but it was valuable to hear again … for his response reflected the character of the man. I also knew if he felt this to be a “God thing” … there would be no deterring him. Let me list a few of those things that reflect Bill’s character and also his skill in ministry;

INTEGRITY. No apologies on this. My vote for any leader in any capacity will look at this first. That means personal life, family life, church life, and professional life are “guarded” and “preserved” over time for the Glory of God. Age becomes a benefit in this regard for integrity is a long term commitment, tested and proven over time. The role is not for a novice. His record is clean!

RESOLVE. Leadership is not for the weak. It demands the most tenacious pursuit of a vision for positive change. I have said to some, when Bill sets out to do the work that God has called him to engage, he holds on “like a bulldog with lockjaw!” Quit – Defect – Retreat – Retire? These are not words in his vocabulary. Big challenges have never deterred him. Europe, the Middle East, the larger world of missions, the local church and even the seminary classroom have put this quality to the test. Bill has never turned aside at any level of his vast experience. His focus is clear!

SKILL. Bill’s credentials speak for themselves in this regard. Missionary, Pastor, Evangelist, Educator, Administrator and capable spokesperson in each. If he has a gap in his skills it is probably due to the fact he can’t be in more than one place at a time. (Although if you check his frequent flyer miles you might wonder if he isn’t getting close!) His gifts and calling are proven!

VISION. I would like to speak to this at the grassroots level. Bill has a vision for what ought to be in Southern Baptist life. He has keenly identified those areas where we may have slipped in recent years. Far from being just a malcontent with a bone to pick, he desires to be a participant in encouraging those who can bring us back to our roots. He wants recognition and empowerment for those who have less voice in our denominational life. In particular, smaller church pastors are on his heart and in his vision. He has an array of suggestions worth considering! His ideas are “spot on” for a healthy future!

Humbly presented to you with no constraint and in full confidence.
